20 Years Selling Watches Taught Him THIS About Collecting

After more than 20 years in the watch business, Rocky has learned that the price on a watch, or the name on the dial, doesn’t always tell you what it’s actually worth to a collector. In this episode of ON TIME: A Collector’s Journey, Lex Borrero and CJ sit down with Rocky, longtime watch professional, MIA Watch Club member, and collector of more than 170 watches, to unpack a career that started almost by accident and eventually became a life dedicated to horology. Rocky takes us from selling jewelry and his first Citizen to studying watchmaking, working around some of the biggest names in the industry, and developing a completely different philosophy on how to buy and collect watches.

Along the way, the conversation gets into price vs. value, movements vs. design, affordable watches vs. high horology, independent brands, chronographs, vintage pieces, and why collectors should understand what they're actually paying for instead of simply chasing a logo or the latest hype. And despite owning more than 170 watches today, one of the pieces that means the most to Rocky is still the scratched-up Citizen that helped start the entire journey.

The guys also get into the current state of Audemars Piguet, why vintage AP continues to inspire collectors, accessible independent watchmaking, and some of the unusual pieces Rocky has added to a collection that refuses to fit into one category.
